Gardai have arrested two people after a man was stabbed to death and a woman received horror injuries.

The shocking incident occurred at around 11pm in the town of Pallasgreen, Co Limerick.

Sources said they were responding to a call that a woman was being assaulted and when they arrived at the house they discovered the body of a 30-year old man.

The man’s body was found at a house in The Grove estate at the entrance to the town on the Limerick city side.

There are unconfirmed reports that the man had been trying to intervene between an incident involving a woman and another man when he received fatal stab wounds, the Herald reports.

Sources said the man was stabbed in the chest, abdomen, and arms. His body remains at the house and a full scale garda investigation is underway.

Gardai said a 34-year-old woman also received an apparent stab wound, and she is being treated for non-life threatening injuries at University Hospital Limerick. Gardai and ambulance crews were dispatched to the scene after initial reports suggested two people had been killed.

A large crowd gathered outside the house overnight and gardai had to remove a number of people from the area as tensions grew. Members of the garda emergency response unit responded to the scene as did several ambulance vehicles.

Gardai have sealed off the house and part of a field that is located behind the house.

Door-to-door enquiries are continuing  today.

“Two men, aged 20 and 32, have been arrested in connection with this investigation and are currently detained at Henry Street and Roxboro Road Garda Stations under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984,” the Garda Press Office stated.

“The scene has been preserved and the Offices of the State Pathologist have been notified.

“Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Bruff Garda Station on 061 382940, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.”

Gardai will await the results of a full post mortem, due to be carried out on the man’s body later today, before deciding the course of their investigation, a source told the Herald.
