The victim of this evening's shooting was a close friend of Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch.

The man, who was shot this evening in Co Meath, was a well-known associate of Gerry Hutch.

Gardai will investigate if this shooting is connected to the ongoing gangland feud between the Kinahan cartel and associates of The Monk.

It is understood that the man was in a car when he was shot, and that he died at the scene.

The man was a well-known criminal, and had in recent years been heavily involved in cigarette smuggling.

He had also been hit with a multi-million euro tax demand by the Criminal Assets Bureau after a three-year probe.

The shooting happened at the Old Mill housing estate in Ratoath, Co Meath, at approximately 7.45pm tonight.

Gardai and paramedics are currently at the scene.
