A man understood to be Irish has been shot dead in an assassination style attack in Spain today.

It is being reported locally that a 30-year-old man was shot dead a resort on the Costa Del Sol.

Local police have cordoned off an area near a swimming pool in a resort complex where the shooting occurred.

A lifeguard at the complex, who discovered the dead body, is quoted as saying: "The gunman was masked and wore gloves. He started shooting in the garage before chasing his victim out into the swimming pool."

Residents of the complex have told members of the press on the ground that the man was Irish and that he had been resident in a ground-floor apartment for about a year.

Reporter Gerard Couzens was told by the lifeguard: “I know he’s Irish because I’ve spoken to him and I’ve seen his identity documents.

“I was the one who identified him. He lives in a ground-floor flat but I don’t know his name or much about him. He’s very reserved."

The shooter fled the scene.

A police investigation into the shooting is ongoing, which bears the hallmarks of a professional hit.

It is the second shooting in the area in a week after a 30-year-old Colombian man was shot and killed in Mijas.
