Man pleads guilty to manslaughter of Cork woman
A jury has been sworn in for the trial of a man charged with murdering a woman in her home in Cork four years ago.
Darren Murphy (40), of Dan Desmond Villas, Passage West, Co Cork is charged with the murder of Olivia Dunlea (36) at Pembroke Crescent, Passage West, Co Cork on February 17 2013.
Mr Murphy was arraigned at the Central Criminal Court today and when asked how he would plea to the charge, the accused replied “not guilty of murder, guilty of manslaughter”.
Counsel for the Director of Public Prosecutions, Tom Creed SC, said this plea was not acceptable to the DPP and a jury was sworn in for trial.
Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy asked the jury to return to the Central Criminal Court in Dublin tomorrow when the two-week trial is expected to start.
