A man has died following a horrific attack in the capital during which he was viciously assaulted before being run over by a car.

The victim, named locally as Stephen Lynch who was aged in his early 30s, was set upon shortly after 7pm last night in Brookview Close, Tallaght.

He was attacked by a number of men, who drove over him with a car when he tried to flee the area.

Eye witnesses said that the victim was "dragged halfway up the road" by the vehicle during the attack.

The car used in the fatal assault was left at the scene and will be forensically examined by gardaí. One of the males seen fleeing the scene also dropped a mobile phone, which will also be examined by gardaí.

Locals in the Brookview estate were forced to lift the car off Mr Lynch as he lay fatally injured on the ground.

A passer-by also administered first aid while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

Emergency services were alerted and gardaí as well as members of Dublin Fire Brigade rushed to the scene.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics he was pronounced dead.

Investigating detectives have yet to establish a definitive motive for the killing.

One line of inquiry being looked at is that the attack is linked to an ongoing dispute in the local area.
