Man jailed for blackmailing ex with sex tape
A man who threatened to send a sex tape of his ex-girlfriend to her family has been jailed for almost three years.
Ackiem Augustine, 25, of Leyton, east London, blackmailed the woman, who cannot be named, with the intimate footage, demanding back £100 he had spent on a gift for her.
He shook his head as he was jailed for 32 months at Snaresbrook Crown Court and, before he was led away from the dock, he looked over at his pregnant girlfriend in the public gallery and said: "Baby, I love you."
In her sentencing remarks, Judge Sarah Paneth said Augustine had a clip of himself and his ex having sex, which he had "appeared to delete" but did not.
"When the relationship ended, you used it to blackmail her," she said.
Between November 4 and November 14 2014, Augustine sent "in excess of 100 messages" with immediate threats to upload the material and reveal it to her mother and sister, the judge said.
The court heard that the money Augustine was asking to have returned was apparently for a gift that he and his mother had bought for his ex and which he felt should be paid back.
Judge Paneth said that when the victim sought to end the relationship in 2011, it resulted in threats of violence to her and threats to "rape her mother".
The pair resumed their relationship but when the victim ended it again Augustine embarked on using the sex clip to blackmail her.
Stephanie Wookey, mitigating for Augustine, said: "Clearly this was a very distressing incident. It has had a very significant impact on the victim."
But she added that Augustine is "on the right track" and has plans to start a university course in September.
Ms Wookey said he has been in a relationship for 18 months and his girlfriend is due to give birth next month.
