Man arrested in connection with violent rape and assault of 17-year-old girl
Gardai have arrested a man in his 20s in connection with the violent rape of a 17-year-old girl nearly two weeks ago.
Detectives investigating the incident arrested the man at his home in Charleville, Cork this morning after the attack on Sunday, 5 July.
They have taken the man, who is in his early 20s, in for questioning about the serious sexual assault. A Garda spokesperson said he is being quizzed at Mallow Garda Station.
The girl was walking home from a party in the north Cork town when she was attacked in the early hours of the morning.
She was found in a very distressed state after her family became concerned she hadn't arrived home.
The young girl was dragged to a green area close to a housing estate before she was violently assaulted before being raped.
Her family raised the alarm when she failed to return and subsequently contacted Gardai when they discovered what had happened.
She was then taken to the sexual assault treatment unit at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital in Cork city.
Gardai investigating the attack cordoned off the area at Rathgoggin Middle and conducted a forensic and technical examination.
They also examined CCTV footage from the town.
"For a young person of that age, it was an horrific ordeal to be put through,” said Supt Pat McCarthy of Mallow Garda Station.
"She was on the way home from the town — it was between 2am and 3am.
"It was very nasty and dreadful experience for such an innocent young girl."
The man can be held for up to 24 hours for questioning.
