Man in critical condition after melee in town centre

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the brawl in Co Leitrim which left a 30-year-old man with serious injuries.

Gardai in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim investigating a serious assault on a 30-year-old male are appealing for witnesses.

Just before 4am on Sunday morning, gardai received a report that a male had been assaulted and was lying on the main street in Carrick-on-Shannon.

When the authorities arrived at the scene, they found an unresponsive male lying on the road.

The injured male was brought to Sligo University hospital by an ambulance that attended the scene.

His condition is described as critical.

The incident occurred before 4am when the injured party was involved in an altercation with a group  of people (both male and female) on the footpath on the main street, near the junction with Bridge Street.

The melee then continued out onto the road.

Gardai have interviewed a number of witnesses and viewed CCTV covering the area.
