A man was being questioned last night by gardai investigating the murder of young mum Samantha Walsh.

The mother-of-four died "in violent circumstances" at her newly-rented apartment in Waterford city.

It is understood that the 31-year-old victim was beaten with an implement.

Gardai said they arrested a man aged in his late 20s yesterday.

A search for the implement or weapon is continuing.

Ms Walsh's body was found in her apartment at Thomas Court in Thomas Street in the city on Friday.

Gardai launched a murder investigation following the completion of a post-mortem examination by deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis.

They are not releasing the results of the post-mortem for operational reasons.

Neighbours at the complex on Thomas Street said Ms Walsh, who was from Larchville, Lisduggan, in the city, only moved into the apartment early last week.

Gardai were called to the address last Wednesday night after reports of noises of fighting in there. Paramedics were contacted on Friday afternoon and found Ms Walsh's body.

It is believed she may have been dead for some hours before she was discovered.

A 28-year-old man, from Thurles, Co Tipperary, was found at the scene and was rushed to hospital suffering from a suspected overdose.

Forensic gardai have been carrying out searches in the Thomas Street, Vulcan Street and O'Connell Street areas for the murder weapon and CCTV is being analysed.

Supt Chris Delaney renewed appeals for anyone who was in the area on Thursday night into Friday morning, or any possible witnesses, to come forward.

They are asked to contact the investigation team at Waterford Garda Station on 051 305300 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
