The man behind yesterday’s horrific murder suicide in Co. Louth was before a court in 2012, charged with possession of extreme animal pornography.

Adrian Crevan Mackin murdered Garda Tony Golden, a father of three in his 30s, and shot his own girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.

The cop killer was in the dock of Newry’s Magistrates’ Court charged with possessing 23 "extreme pornographic images".

Details of the bestiality collection he is alleged to have stored on his computer are too graphic to describe here.

Mackin had been questioned about terrorist offences on a number of occasions and was charged with IRA membership before the Special Criminal Court in January.

He had been arrested following a number of searches carried out in Dundalk and Newry as part of a joint garda and PSNI investigation into the activities of dissident republicans.

He was subsequently granted bail in the High Court.

His victim Gda Golden was a highly respected member of the force with more than 10 years' service.

Originally from Co Mayo, he previously served in the now-closed Kill O' the Grange Station in south Dublin and was later transferred to Louth.

Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan said: "I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of my colleague in a fatal shooting incident this evening while carrying out their duties.

"At this time my thoughts and prayers and those of the entire garda service are with his family, friends and colleagues."

Superintendent Gerry Curley, Garda Golden's boss in Dundalk, was clearly shaken as he paid tribute to the 36-year-old who joined his ranks after leaving Dublin eight years ago.

"Garda Tony Golden was an excellent member of An Garda Siochana," he said.

"He was meticulous in the way he went about his work. He was a quiet, unassuming person who did his job in a diligent manner.

"He was a credit to An Garda Siochana and he will be a major loss to us all."
