Jailhouse smuggling ring linked to ‘Del Boy’ Hutch foiled by prison staff

A smuggling ring which was being used to supply phones and drugs to feuding criminals behind bars has been smashed by prison staff.

The breakthrough came when officers in Wheatfield Prison discovered a stash of drugs and phones hidden behind a block in the wall of a groundskeeping shed on prison grounds earlier this month.

Sources say officers fear trustee inmates were being used to collect and store drugs and phones for associates of senior feud criminal Derek ‘Del Boy’ Hutch.

Hutch (27) – who is considered a top target for the Kinahan Cartel and whose brother Gary was murdered in Spain last October – is serving a 16-year sentence for his role in a botched cash van raid.

Separately he is also serving a six-year term for the manslaughter of Barry Maguire in 2007.

It’s understood all the trustee prisoners working on the grounds in the area of the groundskeeping shed have now been stood down.

A source told the Sunday World: “The phones and drugs recovered had come in over the wall before being collected by the trustee inmates to be moved inside the prison.

“A block had been removed from the wall of the groundskeeping shed and the drugs and phones stashed inside pending transit into the prison.

“The real fear here is that a gun could have come in just as easily.

“Due to staffing numbers there is little or no supervision for trustee inmates out working on the prison grounds.

“All the trustee inmates who would have had access to the shed have now been stood down and have lost their privileges.”

Prison sources say there is no direct evidence to link the phone and drug seizure to the prison’s Hutch faction, but it is strongly suspected some, if not all of the contraband, was destined for Del Boy’s cronies.

Del Boy emerged as a ‘No.1 target’ for the Kinahan Cartel in the immediate aftermath of Gary’s murder over fears he has both the brains and muscle to organise reprisals.

The Sunday World revealed in January of this year how Del Boy was moved to the protection landing in Wheatfield Prison from Mountjoy after being attacked on the C2 landing.

On that occasion convicted gangland killer Craig White fought off two other inmates intent on knifing Hutch with a shiv after pinning him down in his cell.

That attack was the second time in three months Hutch has been attacked in Mountjoy Prison.

In October, brothers Jamie and Leon Griffin attacked him in the A-wing exercise yard after the Kinahan gang put a €10,000 hit out on his head.

The October attack occurred just two weeks Gary was gunned down on the Costa del Sol, in a hit believed to have been carried out on the orders of the Kinahan Cartel.

In the wake of Del Boy’s move to Wheatfield Prison, authorities received intelligence that €5,000 had been put on his head in the west Dublin prison.

Del Boy is a nephew of Eddie Hutch Senior, who was shot dead in his home in Dublin in the wake of the Regency Hotel shooting of David Byrne.
