Investigating Gardai have growing fears for fate of missing couple
There are growing fears among Gardai for the welfare of a couple missing for ten days.
William 'Willie' Maughan (34) and his Latvian girlfriend Anna Varslavane (21) - who have both mysteriously disappeared - were last seen ten days ago in the Gormanston area of County Meath.
The couple were last seen between 2pm and 3pm on Tuesday, April 14.
Detectives investigating the disappearances fear the couple may have met a violent end, according to a report in the Irish Daily Star.
The publication reports investigators are concerned they may have been kidnapped and shot before being buried secretly. It is feared a notorious Dublin criminal targeted them because he believed Maughan had information regarding a murder carried out last year.
The gangster is heavily involved in the drugs trade in the capital and is also a relative of a well-known British celebrity, the publication said.
A source told the Star they are "hoping for the best" but as the days go by the likelihood of the couple turning up lessens.
"We are obivously hoping for the best. But the longer they don't get in touch with their loved ones, the more likely it is they have come to serious harm.
"They could walk in through the door tomorrow, but that is less and less likely."
The source added the criminal is "extremely dangerous and very paranoid".
William's family, who live in Tallaght, have grave fears for their safety and believe they have been taken by a criminal gang.
"My son knew something that he should not have known and that is why they have been taken away," his father Joseph told the Herald.
While stressing that his son is "not a criminal", he said he suspects his disappearance is linked to knowledge of a gangland murder.
"Our son is not a criminal and his girlfriend is an innocent girl who has no family in this country. We want them back no matter what," Joseph said.
"We are fearing the worst but praying to God for the best."
William and Anna had been living in a mobile home on land just off the M1 motorway at Gormanstown in recent months.
