The man suspected of the violent killing of 58-year-old dad James Cahillane, who was found in his burnt out home in Ardraw, Beaufort, Co Kerry, is believed to be a violent thug who is currently in jail.

Cahillane had been brutally beaten in his home before it was torched on the 19th of April 2012.

Sources have said that gardai are satisfied that a notorious criminal from the Munster area, who has several convictions, killed Mr Cahillane, but has never been charged with the crime.

A fresh Garda appeal has been launched to mark the fifth anniversary of the Mr Cahillane’s killing.

At around 2.05am on April 19 2012 his neighbours spotted a blaze at his house and fire services were called to the scene.

A post-mortem showed that Mr Cahilane had been assaulted and suffered several head injuries before the fire.

A murder investigation was launched and despite great assistance by the public, the crime is still unsolved.

Gardai are launching a fresh appeal for information to mark the fifth anniversary of his death and Mr Cahilane's murder will be featured on Crime Call next Monday, April 24.
