More than 27,000 cigarettes were seized by Revenue officers at Dublin Airport when two Moldovan nationals, who had arrived on a flight from Istanbul, were stopped and searched following routine profiling.
The cigarettes were found in the checked-in baggage of a male and a female, both aged in their 30s.
The two were arrested and brought before Judge Lindsay in the Dublin District Court this morning.
They have been remanded in custody to Cloverhill Prison until Monday, when they will be brought back before the court.
The cigarettes, branded 'Marlboro Gold', have a retail value in excess of €14,500, representing a loss to the Exchequer of approximately €11,600.
