Gardai believe that the hitman who gunned down Alan O’Neill over a small drugs debt is still at large.

Mr O'Neill was shot several times shortly after returning to his home at Kiltalown Road at around 10.30pm on Wednesday night.

Two teens are in custody, but gardai believe that a third man pulled the trigger.

The youths, with addresses in Clondalkin and Ballyfermot, were being questioned last night about the brutal killing of low level cannabis dealer Alan O’Neill.

It is understood the two men in custody are well-known to gardaí.

Mr O’Neill was shot at least three times outside his house at Kilalown Road.

Reports indicate that he was in dispute with a local gang over a small drugs debt.

"The victim was not involved in any major criminal activity and while he was involved in a row it didn't appear serious enough to result in murder” a source said.

“Mr O’Neill was not a major player in any drugs network or anything, he just had a row with the wrong man.”

The handgun used in the shooting has not been recovered and the hitman is said to still be at large.

This is the second murder in the capital in less than a week, after the remains of Andrew Guerrine were found on Steelstown Lane, near Rathcoole.
