The brother of notorious gangland figure Gerard ‘Hatchet’ Kavanagh was killed by his own gang, the Christy Kinahan crime gang, because he was stealing cash from them.

Reports in today’s Herald claim that 27-year-old Kavanagh was shot dead because he was pocketing money he was collecting from a notorious Drimnagh drug dealer, who was gradually repaying a debt of over €1m to the Kinahan mob.

Kavanagh was gunned down as he sat in his Volkswagen car on Church Avenue in Drumcondra at 11:30am.

The father of two was shot a number of times and died at the scene.

The killer crashed their car into a wall near the scene of the shooting and then fled on foot towards Grace Park Road and then down towards Richmond Road.

Sources have revealed that the hitmen carried out a detailed surveillance operation before ramming his car and riddling him with bullets.

Paul’s brother Gerard ‘Hatchet’ Kavanagh was murdered by the same gang last September.

Dad-of-two Kavanagh was suspected of being involved in importing cocaine and was a very close associate of notorious heroin trafficker Greg Lynch and feared criminal Paul Rice, and was understood to have been involved in a number of feuds in the city.
