GARDAI believe a drug dealer who was arrested in connection with the murder of Mark ‘Guinea Pig’ Desmond this week was responsible for setting up his murder.

Rapist and murderer Desmond was shot dead in Lucan on December 2 last year after arranging to meet a criminal associate.

That man was among a number of people arrested this week in connection with the killing.

Another man who Gardaí believe was the getaway driver in the shooting was also among several people quizzed as part of the investigation.

Detectives are confident they have established the second man’s role in the murder and are hopeful of making progress in the investigation.

Gardaí arrested a total of five people in connection with the investigation this week and they were all released without charge while a file is prepared for the DPP.

Underworld sources claim that Desmond was killed after a drug dealer working for the Kinahan Cartel left Ireland from Spain to get away from him.

That man had been living with one of the men arrested this week, but Desmond had been visiting the house regularly.

Sources claim he was uncomfortable with Desmond’s presence so left Ireland for Spain.

“The Kinahans weren’t happy with this and wanted him back in business in Dublin,” said the source.

He added that the Kinahans then summoned one of the men arrested this week to Spain and told him to sort out the problem.

“He wasn’t given the choice and was told to set up Desmond,” said the source.

The man, who had been an associate of Desmond for years, was previously linked to a multi-million euro drugs haul.

While Gardaí are confident they have identified the people involved they are exploring other motives for the attack.
