Gardai search land area for missing man after tip-off

Fears: Barry Corcoran
Fears: Barry Corcoran

A missing man who gardai believe has been murdered was last seen alive in the Ballyfermot area of Dublin.

No sighting of Wicklow town man Barry Corcoran has occurred since he was last seen on Cremona Road in the west Dublin suburb on the night of Monday, July 6 last.

The 38-year-old, father to a five-year-old girl, had travelled to Dublin from his Wicklow home on a bus and visited a gym in the north inner city before going to Ballyfermot.

Last night sources said that gardai have been investigating whether Mr Corcoran may have been murdered.

It is understood that he had a disagreement with a dangerous Clondalkin-based drugs gang, but it is not known if this is behind his disappearance.

"A number of searches have taken place in an attempt to find out what happened but, so far, nothing has shown up.

"The firm belief is that this man has been the victim of foul play and the focus is now on trying to find his body," a source said.

Gardai yesterday launched a fresh appeal in relation to Mr Corcoran's disappearance.

They began a search yesterday of lands in the Bawnogue area in west Dublin. Detectives said they had received several tip-offs from the public.

"I share the family's concerns, as it is completely out of character for Barry to go missing in this fashion," Superintendent Brendan Connolly said.

"I have established an investigation team at Ballyfermot Garda Station and they are liaising closely with gardai in Wicklow in the course of this investigation.

"We have carried out extensive investigations since Barry was reported missing.

"As a result of these investigations we have significant concerns regarding his welfare and safety.

"I would urge anybody with information to contact us here in Ballyfermot station," he added.

Barry is described as being 5'11" in height and of thin build.

He has short grey hair and blue eyes and is described as walking with a slight 'shuffle', and also as having an old scar on the bridge of his nose.

When he was last seen he was wearing a dark rain jacket, blue jeans and black Puma runners.
