Gardai launch dole fraud checkpoints
The gardai have launched checkpoints designed to catch dole scammers on their way to work.
The move is designed to tackle commercial drivers, like taxis and haulage and not citizens in their own cars, according to a spokesperson from the Department of Social Protection.
Department of Special Investigation officers were posted in co Kildare this week, questioning drivers along with Traffic Corps gardai.

Multi Agency Vehicle Checkpoints facilitate an approach whereby all agencies can comprehensively identify individuals engaged in vehicle tax evasion, road traffic irregularities or social welfare and tax fraud in particular locations,” said a spokeswoman for the Department of Social Protection.
“The general focus of inquiries is related to individuals driving commercial vehicles, haulage, transport and taxis.”
The Government claims that detections from raids like these saved the taxpayers €905,000 in 2014, €952,000 in 2015 and close to €800,000 in 2016.
