Gardai identify target of 'outrageous' daylight shooting
Gardai have identified the intended target of a 'completely indiscriminate and completely outrageous' shooting which almost resulted in the murders of two innocent men.
Two shots struck the car of a passing motorist during the incident, which gardai said they believe is linked to gang activity.
Investigating Gardaí are looking for two vehicles, a white or off white Ford Transit van; the other vehicle is described as a silver or light blue Audi A4 with a 08 registration.
A chase was under way between the two vehicles when the driver of the one being pursued got out and ran with shots fired after him.
There were up to four male occupants in the second vehicle. The passer-by whose vehicle was shot had slowed down having seen activity on the road. While he was uninjured, he is traumatised by the event.
Garda Declan Lynch said that they do not have ballistics information yet identifying the type of weapon used.
'This was completely indiscriminate and completely outrageous that they didn't take into account the potential for innocent victims, that they were prepared to open fire on a busy road,' said Garda Lynch.
The person being chased made his getaway on foot across hedges and ditches before being picked up by another passing motorist believing him to be in distress. The motorist brought him to a house in the area.
It is believed that one of the people involved in the shoot-out tried the doors of a car being driven by a woman who had a child in the back of the car however her doors were locked. Gardai believe that the people involved in the incident may be local.
Cathaoirleach of Greystones Municipal District Grainne McLoughlan said that she herself was present during the Cullenmore shooting of 17 years ago.
'It's a terrible thing to happen and I do understand it. It's terrifying,' she said. 'These things can take a long time to get over. For months afterwards just driving through that area, without even thinking about it, you would suddenly be afraid. The fact is, somebody knows who these people are and I would urge them to come forward.'
