Gardai hunt thug who broke into woman’s home ‘committed sex attack’

Gardai are hunting for a sex attacker after a man broke into a young woman's apartment in Co Donegal and set upon her.

The woman, who is in her 20s, was attacked in the apartment complex in the centre of Letterkenny.

The man broke into the apartment, carried out the horrific sex attack and then fled minutes later.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning last between 4am and 5am on October 23rd.

Gardai have confirmed they preserved the scene of the attack and examined it and state that their investigation is ongoing.

They have also been trawling through hours of CCTV footage in a bid to identify possible suspects who were in the area at the time.

All CCTV footage in arterial roads leading to the apartment block are also being examined.

Checkpoints were also set up last Saturday night in the area of the attack in a bid to jog people's memories who may have witnessed the attacker hanging around the area.

Local county councillor Gerry McMonagle appealed to anyone with any information to come forward.

Cllr McMonagle, who is chairman of the Joint Policing Committee for Co Donegal, said it is frightening t think that there is someone on the loose who has committed such a crime.

"There are women in their beds and should they be frightened tonight? Of course, they should and they should take the necessary precautions after what has happened.

"This is a very serious incident and to think that someone attacked a young woman in her bed in the apparent safety of her own home of horrific.

"This person needs to be caught and interviewed by gardai and anyone who knows anything should contact the gardai immediately," he said.

Anybody with any information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda station on 0749167100.
