Detectives investigating the Regency Hotel attack last month believe they have found the guns used in the shocking assassination of David Byrne.

Last night, officers from the Special Detective Unit and the Emergency Response Unit swooped on a car in Meath.

A search of the vehicle revealed three AK47 assault rifles in the boot.

The guns will need to be checked by forensics but it is widely reported today that Gardai believe that they are the guns used by the murder gang that killed David Byrne and injured two others at the Regency Hotel in north Dublin on February 5.

The car was stopped on the N2 at Slane and a man has been arrested. He is currently being questioned by Gardai in Drogheda.

It is a major breakthrough in the case for detectives, who are believed to be looking at dissident republican links to weapons seized.
