Two men have been arrested in relation to the murder of a 27-year-old man in September 2012.

Gardai in Laois investigating the murder of Gerard Eglington arrested the two men, aged 21 and 34, this morning.

The two men are being detained at Portlaoise Garda station.

Mr Eglington was shot dead in the Kilnacourt Woods housing estate at approximately 8.30am on the morning of September 24.

Eglington was killed because he was heavily-involved in Ireland's deadliest drugs feud - the bitter gang war between 'Fat' Freddie Thompson's gang and a crew who were allied to jailed gangland killer Brian Rattigan.

Eglington was at home with his 11-year-old stepdaughter and three-year-old son when the attack occurred at about 8.30am on September 24, 2012, at Kilnacourt Woods, Portarlington.

The slain gangster was previously involved in a savage assault on the brother of exiled gangster 'Fat' Freddie Thompson at the Karma Stone pub in the city centre on March 13, 2011.

Gardai have been appealing for witnesses since the incident.

They asked anyone who may have seen unusual or suspicious activity in or around the Kilnacourt Housing estate between 7.30am and 8.30am to contact them.
