Gardai arrest two men after four-hour knife stand-off at barricaded house

Two men were arrested after a long stand-off at a barricaded house in Cork city this morning, while a man and a woman were hospitalised after the incident.

The incident occurred on St Mary's Road, less than 1km from Cork city centre, when a dispute erupted between a man in his 20s and several other occupants of a property in the early hours of the morning.

Two occupants of the property, a male and a female in their 50s, were injured in the confrontation before a man (20s) armed himself with a knife.

He then barricaded himself into the house.

Gardai were alerted at 4.30am and rushed to the property.

The area was sealed off and garda negotiations began with the armed man inside the house.

After protracted negotiations, the man agreed to drop the knife and surrender himself to gardai.

He was immediately removed from the area.

Two people inside the house were allowed out of the property and taken for medical treatment.

All are understood to have suffered multiple cuts and bruises, none of which are said to be life threatening.

The two, understood to be a woman and man in their 50s, are said to be very shocked by what happened.

Two males in their 20s were arrested and brought to Mayfield garda station, where they are currently detained.

The confrontation erupted without warning and is believed to have started when the man in his 20s returned to the house after being out for the evening.

Several rooms inside the property were blood-spattered as a result of the confrontation.

Neighbours were stunned to awake to a garda cordon on Cathedral Road.

"We didn't realise what was going on until we looked out as saw all the garda patrol cars outside," one man said.

"Thank God it ended without anyone being seriously hurt."

The man arrested will be taken for a precautionary medical check before he is interviewed by gardai about the circumstances of what happened.
