Gardai arrest suspect after man killed in broad-daylight knife attack

A 24-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man in Longford this morning.

Gardai have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the investigation into a fatal stabbing that occurred in the Great Water Street area of Longford this morning at approximately 11.50am.

The man was arrested in the Longford area this afternoon and is currently detained at Longford garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

A man, believed to be in his early 30s, was discovered with chest wounds.

He was removed to Mullingar Hospital where he was pronounced dead this afternoon.

The scene was preserved and technically examined.

Gardai are appealing for anyone who may have been in the Great Water Street, Rue Noyal Chetillon Street, or the area of the shopping centre between 11.30am and 12.00pm today to contact gardai at Longford on 043 3350570, the garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
