Gardai have appealed to the public for witnesses to the murder of a man in Tallaght last night.

The victim, named locally as Alan O’Neill (35), was fatally injured in a gun attack at Kiltalown Road. O'Neill was set upon after exiting his car and shot several times in the callous attack.

Speaking at a press conference at Tallaght Garda Station this afternoon, Gardaí said they were in the area when they noticed a Nissan Almera car acting suspiciously.

As they approached the scene two men ran towards the Almera from another car that had just been set alight.

The two individuals, an 18-year-old and a 28-year-old, were arrested. The third man managed to escape the scene, Gardai said.

One line of inquiry being followed is that the killing is related to a debt owed to a west Dublin drugs gang.

O'Neill was treated at the scene before being rushed to Tallaght Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The body-builder was described by locals as a "very nice fella".

Gardai in Tallaght are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have any information to contact them in Tallaght on 01 6666000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
