'Gangland figure' threatened to rape and kill gardai after car chase
A THUG who threatened to rape and kill gardaí following a car chase has been described as a senior Limerick gangland figure.
This week, a court heard how gardaí had to use a baton and pepper-spray to subdue John ‘Kipp’ Tobin after a day celebrating the birth of his eighth child last year.
He appeared in court this week seeking to have his driver’s licence returned, six months after a two-year ban was imposed.
However, the Sunday World can reveal that Tobin was no ordinary driver who lost his head in the heat of the moment.
Tobin is currently a target of the Criminal Assets Bureau, which sought a High Court order in February freezing his house, and he is a pal of gangland figure Ray Collopy.
During that hearing brought by CAB, Tobin was described as having a long history of involvement in crime and as being a senior figure in the Collopy-Keane gang.
His latest court appearance was a result of a madcap car chase in east Clare in April 2016.
After being cornered in a wooded area he shouted: “I will rape every one of ye c**ts! Ye f**king pricks. I’ll kill ye. Come on ye pricks. Who do you think you are? The McCarthy Dundons is it?”
Brandishing a tree branch, he rushed towards the officers, but fell over.
The officers then used a baton and pepper-spray when Tobin continued to resist arrest. Earlier that night he had switched off the lights in his van as he tried to evade the gardaí in pursuit.
His solicitor said it was “a nasty incident” and he panicked when he came across the gardaí.
