Flash grenades and tasers deployed by gardai during tense hostage situation

A man fired gas cylinders and dumbbells at armed gardai today after officers from the Regional Support Unit (RSU) smashed down his door in a bid to rescue hostages in the house.

RSU officers deployed flash grenades before using tasers on the suspect inside the premises in St Mary’s Place, Catherdral Road, Cork, shortly before 9am this morning.

A distressed woman rang gardai at around 5.30am and a four-hour stand-off ensued.

The suspect allegedly threatened to harm a woman and another man.

The man barricaded himself inside, but gardai raided the premises at 9am.

According to a garda source:

“At 4.45am in the 20th September 2016 gardai received a call to attend St. Marys Avenue, Cork to a possible hostage situation.

“Officers attended the scene and the situation was quickly assessed and verified as a hostage situation.

“A woman could be heard from an upstairs bedroom calling for help and the front door downstairs could be seen to be barricaded from the inside with what appeared to be a couch.

“A male was also shouting from an upstairs window at gardai.

“Hostage negotiators and fire brigade and ambulance personnel were requested and attended at scene.

“A cordon was put in place by gardai and negotiators attempted to make contact with the male inside the house.

“Shortly after 8am RSU entered the house forcefully and affected a successful arrest of the two male suspects in their 20’s.

“During the operation, taser, pepper spray and flash bangs were deployed.

“Both suspects were conveyed to Mayfield Garda Station and detained.

“One male was charged and appeared before Cork District Ct and was remanded in custody to appear back at Cork District Ct on Thursday the 22nd September.

“The other male remains in Garda custody.

“A male and a female in their 50’s were taken to hospital for medical attention with injuries that were found to be sustained prior to gardai being made aware of the incident.

“During the incident a number of items were thrown at gardai from an upstairs window. The occupants of the house were known to each other. “
