'Fat' Freddie Thompson returned to Dublin at the weekend despite living under a death threat but his plans were quickly disrupted, it has been reported in the Irish Daily Star.

The gang boss had booked himself and his pals into a well known Dublin city centre hotel but they were all asked to leave just hours later after they became boisterous in the bar.

Gardai are now trying to figure out why he returned to Dublin.

Thompson fled Ireland last month after being released from prison after serving 20 months for assault with a bottle.

It is believed he left the country after gardai told him there was a threat to his life, possibly from the Christy Kinahan gang.

One theory on why he returned now is that he was here to visit the grave of Eugene 'The Devil' Cullen, who was buried last week after dying in prison.

Cullen was a member of the Thompson gang and he had been serving a life sentence for his part in the murder of Seamus O' Byrne (27) at Tymon Park North, Tallaght, on March 13, 2009.
