Detectives appeal after elderly disabled man slashed with hook at his home
Detectives are appealing to the public for information on a home invasion during which an elderly man was slashed with a hook.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday morning in the Clogharevan Park area just outside Newry town.
An elderly man in his 70s was attacked by several men who entered his house and subsequently ransacked it.
He sustained serious injuries during the attack and was rushed to hospital where he is in critical condition.
Speaking today, Detective Inspector David Henderson said the attack happened at approximately 2.30am.
“We have heard from several witnesses who were in the area at the time and we are grateful for their help, however we are keen to speak to others who have not yet come forward,” Mr Henderson said.
“We know from CCTV that there were several vehicles travelling on the McShanes Road at around the time the three men made their escape from the gentleman’s home.
“I would like to appeal specifically to any motorist who was travelling on that stretch of road between 1.30am and 3.30am and who may have seen the three men or anything else that could be useful to investigators.
“They ransacked the bedroom and attacked him with a sharp implement, possibly a hook.”
Police believe a sum of money was taken during the horrific ordeal. They are appealing for potential witnesses to come forward.
“Witnesses or anyone who believes they can assist in the investigation in anyway can contact detectives at Ardmore Reactive and Organised Crime on the non-emergency number 101.”
