Gardai are investigating an incident where a 23-year-old delivery driver was lured to a house and attacked by five men, some of whom were armed with slash hooks.

Reports indicate that the attackers have links to a mob who are heavily involved in a local Traveller feud.

The incident occurred at 10:15pm on Monday night in the Lynn Heights housing estate in Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

The victim, who was named locally as Christopher Nevin, was lured to a house where he was viciously attacked.

Gardai were notified about what happened after Mr Nevin went to a nearby house looking for help with his head covered in blood.

Mr Nevin has since been discharged from hospital.

There have been a number of incidents associated with a feud in the area this summer causing the armed Regional Support Unit to patrol Mullingar and other midland towns.

No arrests have been made in connection with Monday’s attack.

Gardaí in Mullingar have asked for anyone who might have witnessed the attack to contact the Garda confidential line on 1800 666111
