Killer ‘Del Boy’ – whose brother Gary was murdered on the Costa del Sol two weeks ago – was moved from Mountjoy Prison for his own safety following a violent incident on Friday.
The convicted criminal was attacked in Mountjoy Prison’s exercise yard by two prisoners, one of whom was carrying a makeshift knife.
A source has told the Sunday World that the prison chiefs believe the inmates were paid by the Kinahan mob to stab ‘Del Boy’.
However, it is not believed that the attack was a murder attempt.
Del Boy, a nephew of veteran criminal Gerry ‘the Monk’ Hutch, is currently serving 16 years for manslaughter. On Tuesday, Ireland’s leading Hells Angel made an appearance at the funeral of Del Boy’s brother Gary Hutch.
Tattooed biker Matt Kelly (pictured below), nephew of slain mobster Eamon Kelly, was among the hundreds of mourners that brought Dublin’s north inner-city to a standstill. Hutch was gunned down just two weeks ago at Miraflores in Spain in a carefully planned gangland assassination.
Also among the mourners wearing black ties were his cousins Eddie and Ross Hutch, who recently appeared on the Winning Streak show on RTE. However, celebrations over winning a car and cash were cut short by cousin Gary’s brutal slaying at his Spanish bolthole.
Instead, they joined immediate family members who filed in behind a hearse carrying Hutch’s remains from the family home in Champions Avenue, close to O’Connell Street.
When the cortege reached Sean McDermott Street the hearse stopped and the coffin was carried aloft by a number of pall-bearers, who took turns to bear the casket to Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
There was a significant Garda presence in the north inner city while the funeral took place and traffic was briefly stopped on Gardiner Street as the mourners passed.
Hundreds of people waited outside the Church, including the distinctive figure of Hells Angel Kelly who smoked and chatted while waiting for the funeral procession to appear.
His uncle Eamon Kelly was shot dead in December 2012 by Real IRA killer Sean Connolly in revenge for the hit on Alan Ryan in 2012.
This week Gary’s mother Kay called from the pulpit for no retaliation to be carried to avenge her son’s death.
“We do not want retaliation,” she said. “We don’t wish our pain on any other family. Let God be our judge.”
Parish priest Fr Richard Ebejer said “evil does not overcome evil” and told the congregation they were not there to judge the circumstances of Hutch’s death, but to mourn.
The mourners were led by his parents Patsy and Kay and daughter Leonie. His uncle, ‘the Monk’, was not seen at the funeral.
Del Boy had been allowed out on an escorted visit from prison to see his brother’s remains last Sunday.
