Revenue’s Customs Service seized cigarettes with a street value of €2.5m from a container in the Port of Cork yesterday.

The cigarettes were hidden in a shipment described as 'cardboard boxes' on the manifest. The brand of cigarettes seized were 'Eton'.

The container arrived in Cork on Monday, and the shipment had travelled from Malaysia, via Singapore and Rotterdam.

The total street value of the cigarettes is €2.5 million.

Officers are investigating the shipment.

Elsewhere two other seizures have been made in recent days.

At Dublin Port today 300 litres of alcohol and 4,200 cigarettes, valued at €5,400, were seized from an Irish registered van driven by an Irish resident Lithuanian national that arrived from Liverpool.

And yesterday at Dublin Airport, 18,000 Winston cigarettes, valued at €9,000, were found in the luggage of a 25-year-old Moldovan woman who arrived in the capital on a flight from Moscow via Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris.

She has been remanded in custody and will appear again before the courts next week.
