Community alert issued after young girl "viciously attacked and raped" in Dublin

Gardai are investigating an alleged sexual assault in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The young teenage girl, believed to be just 14, was allegedly set upon and raped in the north Dublin suburb of Balbriggan. 

Gardai confirmed to the Independent they are investigating the attack and have appealed to anybody who may have information to come forward. 

A community alert was issued by the Balbigganinfo.ie website after the assault, warning residents to be "cautious" in the area. 

It read: "A young teenager was viciously attacked and raped in Balbriggan during the early hours of this morning at the tunnel near the new all weather pitches.  

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the girl and her family and we hope she recovers from her ordeal and gets back to some form of normality in the future.  

"Please be cautious and if your out and about with friends stick together!"

The attack occurred near the all-weather pitches in the Bremore area of the town, close to O'Dwyer's GAA club.
