Gardai discovered 54 puppies, none of which had valid documentation, in an England-bound van at Dublin Port on Wednesday.

Gardai stopped a van bound for England on Wednesday morning at around 8.30am.

During a search of the van, 54 pups were discovered in a cage.

The breeds of the puppies were Jack Russells, Pugs, Shih Tzus, Beagles, Cocker Spaniels and Bichon Frises.

The puppies were seized and handed over to the DSPCA, as there was no valid documentation produced.

The pups will be quarantined and then placed for adoption.

DSPCA has estimated the value of the pups seized at approximately €34,000.
