Burglar who sexually assaulted 101-year-old woman is jailed
A 27-year-old man has been jailed for eight years for the sexual assault of a 101-year-old woman who he attacked as he burgled her home.
Samuel Cooper was found guilty at Southampton Crown Court of the sex attack but pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary in connection with the offence which happened on February 26.
As well as the prison sentence, Cooper, of Hythe, Hampshire, was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life.
Mike Spicer, of the Crown Prosecution Service in Wessex, said: "The court was told that the victim had been watching TV and fell asleep in bed.
"She was awoken around 1am by a man wearing a hoodie, who then got into her bed and sexually assaulted her. The victim used all her energy to kick out against him.
"In the meantime, a neighbour who heard the noise called the police. By the time the neighbour went into the victim's home, Mr Cooper had left."
Mr Spicer added: "We successfully applied to the court for special measures for the victim to give evidence by a video link and we would like to pay tribute to her bravery in giving evidence against her attacker.
"We would also like to thank the witnesses who gave evidence.
"We hope that the convictions and sentence of the defendant gives some satisfaction that justice has been done."
