Bill the detector dog, assisted by Revenue officers, got his teeth into some contraband alcohol and cigarettes today after he sniffed out a cache of contraband goods.

The springer spaniel uncovered 23 litres of wine, 12 litres of liquor, 660 cigarettes branded ‘Marlboro’ and ‘Vogue’ and 3 kg of tobacco branded ‘L&M’ and ‘Marlboro’, hidden in a van.

Human Revenue officers were also involved in the bust.

The haul was valued at more than €2,400, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €1,850.

The booze and smokes were hidden in a van which had arrived in Dublin from Bulgardai, via Holyhead.

Two Bulgarian men, aged in their 40’s, were questioned and investigations are ongoing with a view to prosecution.
