Balaclava wearing gunman holds family hostage for two hours

A shotgun wielding masked man held a family captive for almost two hours last night.

The incident occurred in the Co Clare village of Sixmilebridge.

Reports indicate that a local man stumbled upon a 50-year-old Kerry man who was masked and holding a shotgun, outside the home of an elderly local couple.

It is believed that the armed man couldn’t gain access to the property and held the local man at gunpoint for almost an hour.

The local man’s 27-year-old daughter and her 29-year-old boyfriend then arrived to the scene having been out searching for the woman’s father.

The gunman turned his weapon on the couple when they arrived and held them captive for almost an hour.

The attacker then took phones and wallets from his victims before he struck the 29-year-old man with the butt of the shotgun.

Reports indicate that the three then overpowered their attacker and held him on the ground until gardai arrive.

He was subsequently arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the Person Act and brought to Shannon Garda Station where he remains under questioning.
