Addict "used his poo to write 'Cops Suck, I want Justice' on cell wall in garda station"

A HEROIN addict smeared excrement on the walls of a garda station cell demanding justice, a court has heard.

Mark Grant (35), who became addicted to heroin at the age of 16, wrote “Cops Suck, I want Justice” with his excrement.

He was arrested after he went into Drogheda Garda Station to make a complaint but then started to become abusive towards gardai.

After he smeared the cell walls, he was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital to be medically reviewed.

However, after he was given the all-clear, he became aggressive and abusive towards the hospital staff and patients, Drogheda District Court heard.

Grant, of Ferrycarrig in Coolock, pleaded guilty to using threatening and abusive behaviour and causing criminal damage to the cell wall at the station on July 23.

He further pleaded guilty to using threatening and abusive behaviour on the same night at the hospital.

He has 39 previous convictions including for intimidating a juror, robbery and wilful obstruction, the court heard.

Defence solicitor Dermot Monahan said Grant, who has been off heroin for eight years but is on a methadone programme, was attending a wedding on the night. “He had alcohol and can’t remember what he did,” said Mr Monahan.

He said Grant, who has an 11-year-old child, had €70 with him to pay for the cleaning of the cell and asked Judge Flann Brennan to be “as lenient” as possible.

“You previously got a suspended sentence but this doesn’t seem to have been a deterrent,” Judge Brennan told Grant.

“You have a very bad record and you were brought to hospital as you needed medical attention and you abused front line staff.”

Grant apologised and said he “doesn’t remember the night”.

Judge Brennan said he will consider handing Grant a community service order of 100 hours in lieu of three months in prison. He adjourned.
