86-year-old nun gagged, gang raped and murdered by burglars
An 86-year-old nun was brutally murdered and gang raped by burglars who made off with a “small” amount of cash.
Sister Gertrud Tiefenbacher’s body was found in her bedroom by a fellow nun at the Sacred Heart Home in Ixopo, South Africa.
The Sister had been gagged with a towel and bound with the cord from an electric typewriter before the men set upon her.
Police have launched a manhunt for the gang who are believed to have committed the heinous crime.
She was alone in her room when the incident happened on Saturday night or early Sunday morning, said police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane.
“She had a very kind heart and was loved by everyone” said Sister Gerald, another nun at the mission.
The Sister couldn’t comprehend why someone would carry out such an atrocious crime against an elderly woman of God.
“This really was an act of savagery against a gentle, caring soul”, she said.
Police are combing the local area for the suspects and are especially interested in those who are facing charges of rape‚ robbery and murder.
“We are following all leads. We are also appealing to the community to come forward with any information that will help us solve this case,” Maj Zwane said.
