A 19-year-old woman has been arrested after the discovery of a child's body.

The woman was detained by Staffordshire Police after officers were called to an address in Packett Street, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent at about 10am on Monday.

A police spokesman said an investigation into the death was under way and patrols had been stepped up to provide community reassurance.

The spokesman said: "Officers will be carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area, and scenes of crime officers will be conducting a detailed examination of the property, and an alleyway behind, which have been cordoned off."

Neighbours said they believed police had forced entry to the terraced house by smashing a window in the front door.

A resident in Packett Street, who asked not to be named, told reporters: "I don't know who lived there but I don't think they've been there very long.

"We've not been told why the alleyway was closed. It's just a shock that they're investigating a death."
