Notorious mob boss James 'Whitey' Bulger was banished to solitary confinement for 30 days after being caught masturbating in his cell.

According to the Boston Globe, Bulger was spotted by a guard doing his rounds at 3am at the US Penitentiary Coleman II in Florida on June 1 last year.

He reported that he had seen Bulger, with the lights on, engaging in a sexual activity.

For the offence, Bulger was sentenced to solitary confinement for 30 days, lost some privileges for 120 days, and had his personal property taken for 30 days.

However, the infamous mobster claimed he wasn't up to anything.

The paper has seen the disciplinary report where Bulger says he was in fact applying medication to his genitals to treat an infection he was embarrassed to report to the prison medics.

“I’ve never had any charges like that in my whole life,” Bulger told the disciplinary hearing. “I’m 85 years old. My sex life is over.”

“I volunteer to take a polygraph test to prove my answer to this charge,” Bulger said, and he also accused the officer who spotted him of setting him up.

Bulger's claims were rejected and he eventually served 23 days in solitary.

The mobster, now 86, was sentenced to life in jail in 2013 after he was convicted of involvement in 11 murders.
