The deal was announced in Hahnville at a Thursday hearing in the case of 32-year-old Shelley Dufresne. The deal avoids a May 20 trial.
The New Orleans Advocate reports that Dufresne pleaded guilty to one felony count of obscenity. Authorities say Dufresne and the male student had sex between Aug. 22 and Sept. 27 at a home in Montz.
She received a $1,000 fine, but a three-year prison sentence was deferred on the condition that she complete 90 days of mental health treatment.
She and another former teacher, Rachel Respess, have been arrested, but the latter has yet to be formally charged, in a Jefferson Parish case involving the same student.
32-year-old Shelley Dufresne and 24-year-old Rachel Respess taught in Destrehan High school and both had been students in the school before commencing their careers.
Police say Respess taught the then 16-year-old American football playing student last year, and Dufresne was his current English teacher. The women are said to be friends.
According to Kenner Police Chief Michael Glaser, the two teachers met with a Destrehan High student after a football game on September 12th, then drove to Respess’s home where the three had sex simultaneously until the early morning hours of September, 13.
“You have an educator, I guess, the responsibility is the safety and education of the children and when it goes outside those lines I believe the community should be outraged,” Chief Glaser said.
Former students told reporters that the student in question and both teachers had been involved for some time, meeting for sex multiple times and documenting some of their encounters on video.
Dufresne was in her tenth year as a teacher, is married with three children, and is the daughter of St. Charles Parish Judge Emile St. Pierre. Rachel Respess was in her second year of teaching.
