A Texas teacher who became pregnant after a long sexual relationship with a 13-year-old pupil faces 30 years behind bars following a guilty plea to sexual assault charges.

Alexandria Vera, 24, appeared in court in Houston this week, according to local station KHOU.

Vera was originally charged with sexual abuse of a child when the case first came to court in June but this week she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated sexual assault.

According to reports read out in court, Vera met the boy in summer school and they had a nine-month 'relationship' with the teacher claiming she and the young pupil "loved each other".

She was even introduced to the boy's family as his girlfriend and the boy was spotted at her home.

Vera discovered she was pregnant in January but decided to have an abortion after she was questioned by Child Protective Services, according to the court.

The original charge Vera faced carried a life sentence but the lesser charge she pleaded guilty faces a maximum penalty of 30 years behind bars.

The boy, now 14, has been placed in foster care while his parents have been ordered to attend parenting classes. They have not been charged.

Vera will be sentenced next year.
