A man, drunk and high on cocaine, raped his mother at knifepoint before stabbing her with various implements, including knitting needles, a court has heard.

Exeter Crown Court was haunted by the details of Alexander McDonald’s gruesome murder of his own mother in her bedroom.

Reports indicate that McDonald, fuelled by cocaine, repeatedly stabbed 57-year-old Catherine with knitting needles before fleeing the scene with robbed cash and his passport.

The jury heard that the 27-year-old restaurant employee got drunk during a wine tasting session at work and then snorted cocaine before returning to his mother's home in, Somerset, UK, late last August.

Prosecutor Mr Simon Laws told the court that after McDonald exchanged sexualised text messages with someone during the early hours of the morning, in a "state of sexual excitement", he entered his mother’s bedroom and proceeded to rape and strangle her.

Mr Laws continued by claiming that the 57-year-old care worker, who wore ear plugs to help her sleep, was found dead the next day with them still in her ears.

"The evidence suggests she was attacked while she was in bed asleep", said Mr Law, according to the Daily Mirror.

"It was a surprise attack.

"She stood no chance against her 27 year old son who is well over six feet tall."

"He used at least three and in all probability four weapons against her."

"Catherine McDonald died as a result of being stabbed and strangled."

In addition, Mr Laws stated that Mr McDonald committed the act by attacking his mother with needles and a kitchen knife.

He told the jury McDonald used the scissors to "force her to submit to a sexual assault' and

Mr Laws said he raped her.

Pathologist reports state that the victim was still alive as all of this happened.

A condom was found and DNA was discovered on Catherine McDonald.

The attacker fled the scene soon after, but not before he grabbed his passport and stole his mother’s smart car in a last ditch attempt to cover up his crime.

His getaway was cut short however as the suspect crashed the car, flipping it over near before being arrested by police who later discovered his mother’s body
