A nanny in South Africa has appeared in court in connection with the alleged abuse of a baby in her care.

The domestic carer, named by newspaper Beeld as Mafsehediso Lisbeth Makashea, was caught on camera physically abusing a 7-month-old baby in her care.

The nanny was allegedly captured dragging and throwing the toddler during a sustained campaign of abuse, which took place in the city of Welkom.

The child's mother - 33-year-old Annami Linde - said she went shopping on December 21 after setting up a camera in her living room to capture the care her baby was receiving.

She said she did so as she had a bad experience with a previous nanny.

Makashea was bailed and scheduled to appear again in court on January 29.
