A restaurant in Nigeria has reportedly been shut down after the owners were accused of serving human flesh following the discovery of bags containing human heads in the kitchen.

According to a report on BBC’s Swahili service, police were alerted to the restaurant by local people who suspected something horrific was going on.

The restaurant, located in the south-eastern province of Anambra, was raided by police shortly after the complaint from locals.

Officers allegedly found human heads, dripping blood into plastic bags, and a cache of weapons including grenades. They also allegedly discovered dishes which contained human flesh being served.

One resident told the BBC: "I’m not surprised at the shocking revelation. Every time I went to the market, I observed strange activities going on in the hotel.

"People who were never cleanly dressed and who looked a bit strange made their way in and out of the hotel, making me very suspicious."

A local priest said he was shocked when served with a bill for €3 at the restaurant - a large amount of money for a meal in a country where much of the population lives on less than a euro a day.

"The attendant noticed my reaction and told me it was the small piece of meat I had eaten that made the bill scale that high," he told the BBC.

"I did not know I had been served with human meat, and that it was that expensive."

Ten people have been arrested by police.
