Priest caught buying crack said he started smoking drug after sister was decapitated by nephew
A priest who was caught buying crack cocaine in the car park of a motel in Long Island, US, told officers that he began smoking the drug after his nephew chopped his sister’s head off.
The New York Daily News reports that 63-year-old Robert Lubrano was arrested after police spotted him exchanging money with another man in the car park of the Bethpage motel.
“I have been smoking crack cocaine ever since my sister was murdered,” Fr Lubrano told police.
His 66-year-old sister Pat Ward was decapitated by her mentally ill son, Derek, in October 2014.
He then carried her headless body through the streets while kicking her head along the road, prompting neighbours to assume it was a halloween prank.
“I thought it was Halloween hoax. There was no big splatter of blood. It looked staged,” a neighbour said at the time.
After the brutal murder the boy threw himself in front of a train.
Pat Ward’s other son, Robert, died of a heroin overdose in 1997.
“He killed my sister because we couldn’t get the prescriptions he needed. For four days, he didn’t have his meds,” Lubrano told the Daily News at the time.
“He was a sick, sick kid.
“I thought I was in a horror movie. Cut her head off?
“To do what he did to the woman he loved the most in this world, his mommy?
“Her whole life, she was there for him. She did the best she could,” he said.
Fr Lubrano was found to be in possession of 800 milligrams of “a white/yellowish rock-like substance” a metal pipe stained with residue and a bag of cocaine was allegedly discovered in the coin compartment of the priest’s Toyota.
The alleged drug dealer, 32-year-old Michael Oyola, was also arrested.
Fr Lubrano is due to appear in court again on Monday.
