Police in New York are investigating a gruesome attack where a pregnant woman appears to have been stabbed to death before her unborn baby was removed.

The 22-year-old woman, who police in the Bronx say was pregnant, was attacked by another woman.

According to reports the victim suffered a serious assault in an apartment in the city at the hands of another woman who then crudely cut out her unborn child.

Local Councilman Andy King said: “It appears that the fetus of this woman was removed ... surgically removed by the perpetrator.”

“This is an ugly incident that cannot be condoned.”

Police arrived to find the alleged attacker with the bloody baby in her arms, cliaming the newborn was hers.

Incredibly the tiny infant survived and is now being cared for at a nearby medical centre.

“She tried to sell the idea that the baby was hers and she had just given birth right there,” a police source is quoted as saying in the New York Daily News. “But that was clearly not the case.”

Charges are now pending against the alleged attacker while she undergoes a psychiatric evaluation.
