A 27-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving and a drug offence after police stopped a car for going the wrong way along a motorway.

Christopher Burnett, of Folkstone Road in East Ham, east London, was also charged with possession with intent to supply cannabis and is due to appear at Cannock Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Staffordshire Police said officers tried to stop a black Ford Galaxy on the A449 near Stafford at about 8.40pm on Monday but it was driven off.

The car joined the southbound carriageway of the M6 at junction 13 and was driven for five miles the wrong way along the hard shoulder before getting off at the next junction.

Police later stopped the car which had 12kg of suspected cannabis vegetation inside, and arrested a man.

Officers are still trying to trace a second occupant who fled the scene.
